DC Power Supplies

At Creativeit Group we have a wide range of AC and DC power supplies in various ranges. Professional brands such as Chroma, Keysight, Tektronix, Kikusui, Lambda and Rigol.

In English it is known as a power supply unit (PSU), which refers to the source of electrical power.

Classification.

Power supplies for electronic devices can basically be classified as linear and switching power supplies. Linear supplies have a relatively simple design, which can become more complex the more current they must supply, but their voltage regulation is not very efficient. A switching supply of the same power as a linear one will be smaller and normally more efficient, but it will be more complex and therefore more prone to failure.

Basic diagram of a linear power supply

Linear supplies follow the scheme: transformer, rectifier, filter, regulation and output

First, the transformer adapts the voltage levels and provides galvanic isolation. The circuit that converts alternating current into pulsating direct current is called a rectifier. It is usually followed by a circuit that reduces ripple, such as a capacitor filter. Regulation, or stabilization of the voltage to a set value, is achieved with a component called a voltage regulator, which is nothing more than a closed-loop control system that, based on the circuit output, adjusts the voltage regulating element, which in the great majority of cases is a transistor. This transistor, which depending on the supply topology is always biased, acts as an adjustable resistance while the control circuit works the active region of the transistor to simulate more or less resistance and thereby regulate the output voltage. This type of supply is less efficient in its use of the power supplied, since part of the energy is converted into heat by Joule heating in the regulating element (transistor), because it behaves as a variable resistor. At the output of this stage, to achieve greater ripple stability, there is a second filtering stage (although not necessarily, as it all depends on the design requirements), which can simply be a capacitor. This current carries all the energy of the circuit, and for this power supply certain specific points must be taken into account when deciding the characteristics of the transformer.
