The permeability of magnetic materials is a property that describes a material’s ability to conduct a magnetic field. In other words, it measures how easily a material allows magnetic field lines to pass through it. For toroidal magnetic materials, this property is particularly important because it allows efficient measurement of the material’s magnetic behavior in applications such as transformers, inductors and magnetic coils.
A toroidal magnetic material is a material shaped like a ring or “donut.” Toroidal magnetic materials are often used in applications where controlled magnetic behavior is required, since the toroidal shape allows the magnetic field to flow in a closed path, minimizing radiation losses and improving efficiency.
The permeability of a toroidal magnetic material can be determined from its behavior in an applied magnetic field. This is typically done through a magnetic permeability test, in which the relationship between the applied magnetic field and the resulting magnetic flux density is measured.
For this type of test we have the Agilent 16454A, which is designed for accurate permeability measurements of toroidal magnetic materials. Because the construction of this fixture creates a single turn around the toroid (with no magnetic flux leakage), there is no need to wind a wire around the toroid. Complex permeability is calculated from the inductance with and without the toroid. When the E4991A/4291B with option 002 is used as the measuring instrument, direct readings of complex permeability are possible. It is also equipped with a small and a large adapter to accommodate a wide range of sizes.
