Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) Immunity Testing

Protection and reliability in electronic equipment

Electrostatic discharge (ESD) immunity is one of the essential tests within electromagnetic compatibility (EMC). Its purpose is to ensure that electrical and electronic equipment can withstand the static electricity discharges that may occur in the operating environment, without suffering damage or interruptions.

In sectors such as industrial automation, telecommunications, healthcare, energy and consumer electronics, these tests are key to ensuring safety, quality and regulatory compliance.

What Is an Electrostatic Discharge (ESD)?

An electrostatic discharge occurs when two objects at different electrical potentials come into contact or approach each other, releasing energy in the form of a spark.

Common situations where ESD occurs:

  • Human contact with sensitive electronic equipment.
  • Handling of components on production lines.
  • Dry or low-humidity environments.
  • Connecting or disconnecting signal or power cables.

Although sometimes imperceptible, these discharges can damage microcontrollers, electronic boards, displays, sensors and integrated circuits.

What Does ESD Immunity Testing Involve?

The electrostatic discharge immunity test (IEC 61000-4-2) simulates in the laboratory the real conditions to which equipment is exposed during operation.

Basic procedure:

  1. The equipment under test (EUT) is placed on a test table.
  2. Direct and indirect discharges are applied with an ESD generator.
    • Contact mode: discharge applied directly to conductive parts.
    • Air mode: discharge applied to insulated surfaces or to the nearby air.
  3. The equipment’s response is measured:
    • Does it operate normally?
    • Does it show resets, lockups or errors?
    • Does it suffer permanent damage?

Benefits of ESD Immunity Testing

  • Protection of sensitive equipment against invisible but costly damage.
  • Greater reliability in industrial environments and areas with heavy foot traffic.
  • Compliance with international standards (IEC, CE, UL, among others).
  • Fewer field failures, avoiding production stoppages.
  • Customer confidence: assurance of quality and durability.

Why Is ESD Immunity Important?

ESD is one of the main risks to modern electronics due to component miniaturization and the use of highly sensitive semiconductors.

Companies that manufacture, integrate or use electronic equipment must ensure their devices withstand electrostatic discharges, avoiding returns, repairs and loss of reputation.

This study not only protects your equipment investment, it is also a mandatory requirement for certification in many international markets.

Electrostatic discharge (ESD) immunity is a pillar of reliability in electronic equipment. With these tests, it is possible to prevent damage, reduce maintenance costs and comply with international electromagnetic compatibility standards.
