Maximum accuracy in resistive measurements for small materials
We offer rental of specialized equipment for applying the ASTM D257 and ANSI/ESD STM11.11 standards
ASTM D257 – Standard Test Method for DC Resistance or Conductance of Insulating Materials
This ASTM International standard describes test methods for measuring the resistance and resistivity of insulating materials. It allows calculation of the surface and volume resistivity of materials under direct current.
The Monroe Electronics SE0032 Mini Guard Electrode is designed to perform surface resistivity (Ω/□) and surface resistance measurements with high accuracy when used with the Monroe Electronics Model 272A. Unlike standard-diameter electrodes, its Mini Guard configuration makes it possible to evaluate small samples or localized areas that do not meet the minimum size required by conventional probes, without compromising the metrological integrity of the test. It is ideal for hard-to-reach places or small dimensions.
Its concentric geometry, with an active center electrode and a perimeter guard ring, minimizes lateral leakage currents, controls the electric field distribution and reduces edge effects, ensuring that the measured current flows exclusively through the effective test area. This yields repeatable, comparable and technically traceable results in accordance with methodologies such as ASTM D257, even when analyzing specimens smaller than usual in ESD evaluations and in the characterization of dissipative materials.
In addition, our laboratory has climatic chambers with precise humidity control, which allows samples to be conditioned before and during the surface resistivity measurement.
ANSI/ESD STM11.11 – Surface Resistance Measurement of Static Dissipative Planar Materials
An ESD Association standard for measuring the surface resistance of ESD (electrostatic) dissipative materials using concentric electrodes such as those of the guard probe. It is widely used for electrostatic discharge control in electronic products and materials.
EIA-541 — Packaging Material Standards for ESD Sensitive Items
The EIA-541 standard, developed by the Electronic Industries Alliance, establishes test methods for evaluating the electrical properties of packaging materials intended to protect electrostatic discharge sensitive devices (ESDS).
To comply with the standard, measurements must be made exclusively with concentric electrodes (center electrode and guard ring), since this configuration ensures a controlled electric field and technically valid results. It is worth noting that our laboratory has calibrated concentric electrodes suitable for performing these tests, which allows evaluations in accordance with the technical requirements established in EIA-541.
A minimum sample diameter of 63 mm (2.5 inches) is required; ideally, samples of 100 mm x 100 mm (4” x 4”) are recommended to avoid edge effects and ensure that the electrode and guard ring rest fully on the material.
EIA-541 also describes test methods for evaluating surface resistance, volume resistivity, electrostatic shielding capability and charge dissipation properties, ensuring that packaging materials control and reduce the risk of ESD damage during storage and transport.
It allows materials to be classified as conductive, dissipative or insulative, facilitating their selection within ESD control programs in the electronics industry.

Sensor Protection: The protective structure extends the electrode’s service life and reduces wear-related errors.
Application Versatility: Ideal for electronics, materials research, quality control and technical education.
Seamless Integration with the 272A: Compatible without additional adapters for fast, accurate and repeatable measurements of surface resistivity, volume resistivity or resistance to ground in one versatile instrument
The SE0032 is a specialized small-footprint electrode that extends the capability of the Model 272A to measure:
-
Surface resistivity
-
Point-to-point resistance
-
Electrical properties in critical areas
-
Conductive, dissipative and insulating materials
The SE0032 uses an outer guard ring with a spring-loaded active inner electrode that makes contact with the surface under test. This configuration:
-
Ensures a controlled electric field between the ring and the center electrode.
-
Minimizes leakage currents and errors due to non-ideal geometries.
-
Provides repeatable, reproducible measurements when used with the Model 272A.
The Model 272A meter applies a test voltage and measures the current flowing through the material. The guarded design of the SE0032 ensures that only the region defined between the ring and the electrode tip influences the result, so that the reading reflects the true resistivity of the sample.
